Stripe payment statuses definitions

Definitions of the different Stripe payment statuses you may see in your Stripe Dashboard transaction log.

Written by Nettla

When you access your Stripe Dashboard to view your transaction log (Payments), you will be presented with some Stripe-defined payment statuses. This article explains each of these statuses.

Uncaptured

Equivalent to 'reserved' or 'authorised'. Means that the player has made the purchase but the money is only reserved on their card, not charged yet.

Succeeded

Equivalent to 'charged' or 'captured'. Means that a payment has officially happened and can be considered income for the club.

Cancelled

Means that an uncaptured amount was cancelled. This is common for when a player or admin cancels a future session within 6 days of the initial purchase moment.

Refunded

Means that an already succeeded payment was refunded in full to the player. This is common for when a player or admin cancels a future session more than 6 days after the initial purchase moment.

Partially refunded

Means that an already succeeded payment was partially refunded to the player. This is common for

  • True partial refunds made by an admin

  • Refunding the creator of a court booking -> split payment where the full court cost was first reserved -> successful on their account

(Both of the examples above point to moments when the future session took place more than 6 days after the initial purchase moment)

A common scenario that produces a 'Partially refunded' status is the court booking pay your part system. When a player books a court and enables pay your part, Nettla reserves the full court cost on the lead booker's card to guarantee the club receives its full income regardless of how many players end up joining. Once other players pay their share, the lead booker's original charge is partially refunded to reflect their actual share of the cost.

Example: A court costs £40 in total. The lead booker is charged £40 upfront. Three other players each pay £10. The lead booker then receives a £30 partial refund, leaving them with a net charge of £10. The Stripe status for the lead booker's payment will show as 'Partially refunded'.

This status appearing on a court booking is completely normal and expected — the system is working exactly as designed.

Failed

You can click on the specific payment and Stripe often lists the specific reason why that payment failed in the details of that payment.
